A few weeks ago I was asked if I’d be interested in reviewing Mentor Me off Sugar Detox*. A 6 week programme with my very own mentor who will help wean me off the sweet stuff, steer me to a healthier direction with recipes, daily text messages, emails to check my progress, support groups and a huge wealth of information.
‘Yes please!’ I said. Willing to give anything a go in my quest for a healthier and happier body (2015 is my ‘ultimate fitness goal year’ in case you haven’t heard) I was pre warned that it wouldn’t be easy and would require commitment and a lifestyle change on my part. Never one to shirk a challenge I began to prepare myself for the weeks ahead by stuffing my face full of all the leftover Christmas chocolates and treats for old time’s sake and in a bid not to look back wistfully on my decadent sugary ways but forward to a healthier (and hopefully slimmer) new version of me who didn’t need sugar to feel good.
I jest, but actually sugar and I have become firm friends over the last couple of years. When I was younger I could take it or leave it but in recent times I seem to have developed quite an addiction and have managed to come up with various excuses as to why I need a sugary pick me up. Such as the old, I’m breastfeeding so need the extra calories and so it goes on. I’ve begun to realise that when I’ve had a particularly bad sugary binge such as the aforementioned Christmas chocolates, I really do feel like complete and utter rubbish after and have been wanting to try and eradicate my tendency to go sugar crazy for a while now, so this offer really couldn’t have come at a better time.
The notion of detoxing may sound a bit American but is steadfastly becoming the way forward in the UK too. As a nation we are becoming more and more aware of the issues surrounding food, and the sugar debate is quite often discussed in the media. As a Mum I do my absolute best in feeding my children healthy and well balanced meals and I really do go out of my way to dissuade them from sugary treats and shield them from my bad habits but one of the things that is apparent is sugar is EVERYWHERE and so I need educating.
What exactly is Mentor Me off Sugar? Well, it’s a complete holistic approach to a sugar detox programme. It’s aim; to change our habitual and emotional dependence on sweet food and to assist in providing a way in which to find a long-term and healthy relationship with sugar. The founder of Mentor Me off Sugar, Laura Thomas originally began documenting the healthy changes that she implemented to her own lifestyle by blogging about her journey. Laura studied and researched extensively and as her knowledge on the subject of sugar in our diet grew she became certified with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Laura now successfully coaches others on a 1-2-1 basis, helping and inspiring them to have a healthier relationship with sugar.
Laura has thought of absolutely everything and taking a look at her website is a whole wealth of information on sugar and the effect it has on the body and why. There is a plethora of practical and inspiring advice both in written and video format. Best of all for me is the recipe plan and shopping list that takes you through the process week by week. When it comes to things like this I personally love being told what to do so I don’t have to think about it and plan it all for myself. For me this was the easiest and most refreshing part of the programme. Laura has done all the hard work and taken the stress of planning away so you don’t have to worry about it. There’s also a facebook support group where any questions are answered daily, as well as a place to chat and swap tips and experiences with others on the programme.
I’m now at the end of my first week on the Mentor Me off Sugar detox and feeling super positive about the week ahead. Having the text messages from Laura is like having a friend (or good angel on my shoulder) at the other end of the phone encouraging me. Laura knows exactly the right things to say each day. When those sugar cravings hit, she’s there to remind you how well you are doing and how fantastic you will feel at the end of it!
Over the course of the week I will share a couple of recipes that I’ve been trying out so that you can see for yourselves that a low sugar lifestyle doesn’t need to be boring. I will also let you know how I’m getting on with this in a couple of weeks and tell you about any physical changes too, so stay tuned. I’ll just finish with a visual from Laura’s site which pretty much sums up some of the reasons I’m doing this..
*This post is a collaboration with Mentor Me off Sugar. The detox programme was given to me for free in exchange for an honest review, which is as always in my own words.
