Days Out-Our visit to Dan Yr Ogof Caves in Wales

    By Amy Treasure · May 14, 2014 · 1 Comment

We love days out and a trip across the seven bridge to Wales isn't uncommon for us. On Sunday morning we headed off down the motorway and after an hour or so we arrived at The National Showcaves Centre for Wales-Dan Yr Ogof.

The attraction is tucked in amongst beautiful scenery and rolling hills, and the caves are the best we've ever visited. As well as three caves to explore there are life size dinosaurs to marvel at! These proved particularly popular with the toddlers (and most adults!) within our party.

There are ten attractions all together which include an iron age village, a museum and a shire horse centre.

The best part of the day for us, was exploring inside the caves. This also gave me the opportunity to test out my camera skills and I'm proud to say all pictures were taken manually without flash-if you are an amateur photographer then you will get why this is an accomplishment as the caves were (obviously) pitch black apart from some 'mood lighting'.

Inside there are weird and wonderful, almost alien like structures that have formed over millions of years from the limestone.

The Cathedral Cave evokes the most wonderful atmosphere with classical music playing and huge crashing waterfalls. They have a wedding licence so you could even get married inside the cathedral cave which would be amazing, and makes me annoyed that Justin and I are already married!

We had an absolutely wonderful day even though it poured down so unfortunately we didn't make it into the Shire Horse Centre and Farm attraction, but having been before they are definitely worth seeing too.

All in all a really brilliant day out and money well spent, well worth a visit.

Have you been to Dan Yr Ogof? What's your favourite day trip? I would love to hear your recommendations.

*I wasn't paid or compensated in any way to write this post, I just like the place!

This looks amazing Amy! We are regularly heading down the M4 to Wales so this looks like a good place to stop. Thanks for sharing, I think all of my kids would enjoy this. Great photos!
