Sink your teeth into a deliciously moreish easy to make treat, you'll never be able to stop at one piece!
Chocolate orange fudge is so simple to make and would be a brilliant budget-friendly option for homemade Christmas gifts.
The recipe makes 40 generous sized pieces of fudge so you could easily bag it up as presents - but make sure you keep some for yourself!
3 simple ingredients
All you need are chocolate oranges, condensed milk and butter for this easy 3 ingredient microwave fudge. It's very chocolatey and the orange flavour really shines through.
It's a no-bake recipe so you won't need a sugar thermometer. It can be made on the hob or in a slow cooker, but I find it's much easier and a lot quicker to melt everything together for a couple of minutes in the microwave.
Terry's Chocolate Orange
I published a Nutella and Ferrero Rocher fudge recipe the other day and the people on my Facebook page went crazy over it. That particular recipe was adapted from the Carnation easy fudge.
So I decided to adapt the recipe further to incorporate chocolate oranges because I know how much everyone loves them!
I used dark chocolate oranges for the base of this recipe and I know that's unusual compared with other recipes online.
By the time you've added the condensed milk and butter, plus the Terry's milk chocolate orange minis on top I feel like dark chocolate is the better option - otherwise, I find the fudge is way too sickly.
Another good thing about using dark chocolate is that the fudge sets firmer while retaining the beautiful smoothness of a piece of chocolate orange.
It doesn't actually taste like dark chocolate at all, more like a very intense big chocolate orange hit in one fudgy mouthful.
Topping
For the topping, I used the milk chocolate Terry's mini segments. These are the ones you buy in the bags. I used 40 in total which worked out to be about a bag and a half. I added the segments on top of the fudge in 8 rows with 5 segments to each row.
I found this to be the perfect amount for cutting the fudge up into decent-sized individual pieces, using the segments as a guide when cutting it up.
Each piece of fudge had a mini orange segment so it worked out really well and no one can complain they didn't get a bit of chocolate orange haha!
Variations
This recipe is really forgiving so if you'd like to try it using different types of chocolate you have options!
- You can use milk Terry's chocolate oranges instead of dark but be prepared for a softer set fudge.
- Use a mixture of milk and dark Terry's chocolate oranges.
- You could use one chocolate orange and then an additional 300g of any milk or dark chocolate.
- This recipe will also work if you used all milk or dark chocolate (any brand - 450g) and then added 2 teaspoons of orange extract to get the orange flavouring. This would be a good option if you're trying to keep the cost down however, it's worth buying the Terry's oranges when they are on offer in the supermarket for £1.00 each.
Microwave
- Chop the Terry's chocolate oranges up into small pieces. Tip them into a large microwaveable bowl, add the condensed milk and butter.
- Microwave on full power for 20-30 seconds. Mix. Continue microwaving in 20-30 second bursts until all the ingredients have melted.
- Beat well, the texture will be very thick smooth and glossy.
- Transfer to a lined 20cm square tin and smooth the top. Add the Terry's segments on top in rows. If you're using a 20cm square tin you will need to add 8 rows with 5 segments in each row.
- Leave to set in the fridge overnight. Cut into individual pieces using the segments as a cutting guide.
On the hob
- Chop the Terry's chocolate oranges into small pieces and add them to a heavy-based saucepan. Add the condensed milk and butter.
- Place the saucepan over a low heat and stir constantly until the ingredients have melted.
- When you have melted the ingredients, follow the same steps as the microwave version above.
Slow cooker
- Chop the Terry's chocolate oranges into small pieces add them to a slow cooker along with the condensed milk and butter. Leave off the lid.
- Turn on high and stir every 15 minutes, it will take about 1 hour.
- You will know it’s ready when it’s formed a crust on top.
- Transfer to a square 20cm baking tin lined with baking parchment. Add the mini chocolate orange segments on top.
- For the next steps see the microwave version above.
Storage
This type of fudge should be kept refrigerated at all times. If it is left to come to room temperature it will soften. Take a couple of pieces from the fridge when you fancy some.
No, evaporated milk is different to condensed milk and can’t be used to make fudge. I believe the US version of condensed milk is called sweetened condensed milk.
It will keep for 2 weeks and should be stored in the fridge.
Yes it freezes well for up to 3 months.
Sounds like it was overheated, this sometimes happens with chocolate oranges because of the orange oil. Try adding a tablespoon of milk and beating really well until it comes together
It could have been overheated or overmixed. Put it in the freezer for a couple of hours.
