A classic White Russian made from Vodka, Kahlua, double cream and plenty of ice. This cocktail can be mixed in minutes and you won't even need a shaker to make it!
This White Russian tastes rich and decadent thanks to the coffee liqueur and cream. The addition of vodka lends a good alcoholic kick.
If you love cocktails, why not try my incredibly popular Pornstar Martini out?
A good way to remember the ingredient quantities for a White Russian is equal parts of Kahlua and cream then double the amount of vodka.
So 60ml vodka to 30ml each of Kahlua and cream. If you don't like a strong cocktail then you can adjust the quantities so they are all equal at 30ml.
If you want a longer cocktail then you can add more double cream.
Can I add Baileys?
Since I'm partial to a creamy cocktail a White Russian is one of my favourites. It's so quick to make and you don't need the faff of a shaker plus it's a nice alternative to Baileys over ice.
Speaking of Baileys, you might be wondering if you can use Baileys to make a White Russian and the short answer is: yes!
Simply replace the cream in the recipe with the same amount of Baileys and voila - you have yourself a Baileys White Russian.
So what is a White Russian and where does the name come from?
It's a Black Russian but with the addition of cream. Oh, and it's not even Russian in origin.
In fact, the only reason for the 'Russian' in the name is because one of the main ingredients is vodka.
It was invented by Gustave Tops, a Belgian barman who also designed the Black Russian. This was in honour of Perle Mesta who was the US ambassador to Luxembourg at the time.
The White Russian cocktail has had a bit of a revival since it was the cocktail of choice in the film The Big Lebowski.
What is Kahlua?
Kahlua is a coffee liquer from Veracruz, Mexico. It contains rum, sugar and arabica coffee.
Kahlua was first produced by Pedro Domecq in 1936. The name means "House of the Acolhua people". (Source: Wikipedia)
It's a really good coffee liqueur and has a smoother and rounder taste than the generic cheaper versions you can buy in the supermarkets.
It's an excellent choice for many cocktails such as an Espresso Martini or Mudslide. Kahlua is also good for baking with especially desserts like Ice Cream or Cheesecake.
Is there an alternative to double cream?
You can substitute the double cream in this recipe with any of the following:
- Heavy cream
- Full-fat milk (only if you're in a pinch!)
- Half and half
- Baileys
- Coconut cream
How to make a White Russian
As I mentioned before it's not necessary to make this cocktail in a shaker.
The process of making it is actually quite theatrical. You'll see what I mean for yourself when you pour the cream into the alcohol.
If you want to add the ice and all the ingredients to a shaker that is fine. You will end up with a smoother cocktail but the ice will dilute it so personally, I think it's better and more fun to mix it all by hand.
Step One: Add lots of ice to a glass then add the Kahlua.
Step Two: Add the vodka.
Step Three: pour the double cream in and watch as it slowly swirls and dances its way into the drink.
Step Four: Give everything a good stir and enjoy!
